NO RAIN, NO RAINBOWS

It’s very quick, a throw away line at best. But, perhaps it’s the best line of the entire commercial.

A nationally known cell phone company portrays what it would be like if a wedding could be managed by movie set grips and directors.

The bride stepping onto her ‘mark,” asks quickly “Why is it raining?” to which the wedding planner yells to the grip via cell phone “Cut the rain!”

“No rain, no rainbows” said the grip, somewhat sadly, as he ‘turns off’ the rain.

How many times have we appreciated the rainbow instead of the rain? I myself have complained long and loudly to anyone who will listen about the rainy summer we’ve had this year, although I’m sure the farmers would tend to disagree.

After traveling this year to other parts of the country where there have been near drought conditions, I was happy to finally be home and sit with my beloved on the deck with a hot cup of coffee. Even though it looked like storm clouds were threatening our calm reverie at any moment, somehow the sun was able to peek through in spots.

Bemoaning the fact I had come back to yet another rainy evening, imagine our surprise to turn to the east and find not one, but two spectacular rainbows!

Highlighted against the dark storm clouds over the lake, the sun peaked behind in places, creating the meteorological mish-mash bending light and darkness. It was an unexpected treat and we watched it intently until it faded away, leaving us once again with silhouettes of sunlit shapes hiding behind puffy clouds. I realized the necessity of one for the other.

Rainfall comes in many forms and we appreciate when the showers are over. We appreciate even more the end result of the spectacular rainbows at completion.

But let’s not forget how important it is not only to survive the rain, but also embrace it and all the challenges it brings. The rainbow will always be there, whether we see it or not.

No rain, no rainbows. Someone should have been paid a bonus for that line.
